The Adderleys

The Adderlys fled the American Revolution and settled on Long Island, bringing with them large numbers of slaves. They established a cotton plantation and, for a while at least, prospered. So the story is told, old man Adderley discovered his son was in love with one of his slaves. It's difficult to imagine why the old man was so shocked by his discovery. Liaisons between slaves and their masters were an accepted fact in those days, so one has to wonder exactly what it was that drove the senior Adderley to take his own life. But the event apparently had little effect on his son for the relationship between the two lovers continued. Today, their descendants are still a major part of the population of Long Island. And the ruins of the once-proud Adderley mansion are all that's left of the family's glory days of the early 1800s.
